Good Will Hunting A review by: Blake Kunisch Directed by: Gus Van Sant & Gus+Van+Sant Released: December 5, 1997 - US Posted: 1998/01/11 | 8/10 starsGood Will Hunting stars Matt Damon as Will Hunting, a genius who has no real control over his social relations - he gets in fights, doesn't interact well with others, among other things. When Damon is sentenced to jail for assaulting an officer, he is ultimately released under the condition that he sees a therapist, Robin Williams. Through his therapy, he is able to keep a steady girlfriend (Minnie Driver), gets a job, and gives us a look into his life as he was able to rise up as an orphan and get to the top through the utilization of his genius. Written by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, two relative unknowns before this, Good Will Hunting is directed by Gus Van Sant (To Die For). The script is powerful, and the acting top-notch - both Damon and Affleck are great in their roles. Good Will Hunting could have gone down the road of similar films, being formulaic and predictable, but with a brilliant script and great direction, it is able to rise above films of similar direction. Good Will Hunting will not disappoint, but is not for the young ones. Mature teenagers will enjoy the film as well as adults, but it is rated R for a reason. With that in mind, I don't think you'll be disappointed. Genres: Drama, Romance Rated: R - For strong language, including some sex-related dialogue.
