8MM A review by: Blake Kunisch Directed by: Joel Schumacher Released: February 26, 1999 - US Posted: 1999/02/26 | 7/10 stars8mm, the much-anticipated film starring Nicolas Cage, is a suspenseful, and at most times heart-pounding movie. From the writer of Se7en, this movie isn't more deranged, but just as disturbing. Nicolas Cage as Tom Welles sets out to prove the falsity of a "snuff film" that was found after the death of millionaire Mr. Christian in his private safe. The movie is very disturbing and contains many graphic images. As Max California states, "Dance with the devil, the devil don't change, the devil changes you," the movie illustrates the change of Tom Welles as he searches for the truth behind the film. The slow change of Tom Welles is the driving force behind this film as his whole outlook on life and his slow progression to the executor of the law, providing justice where it is due. He starts out just as a detective trying to find the truth behind the film, but as he uncovers the atrocities that have been committed, his perspective and attitude towards life change as he becomes more and more sympathetic towards the victims and develops a hatred for the victimizer. We see at the end of this movie a similar ending to Se7en, as writer Andrew Walker probably intended to connect the two. We also noticed a common camera shot that is seen in many Cage films (see The Rock and Face/Off) - even though they had different directors, I think that this is a patented Nick Cage shot that he demands in his movies. I hope somebody knows what I'm talking about. Overall, this was an extremely vivid and disturbing movie with images that are definitely not appropriate for younger children. The R rating is quite forgiving for this movie. As this movie deals with pornographic films, the movie contains some images that are not appropriate for any ages. This movie will probably never make it to the TV without editing about half the movie. Even with the disturbing images, this is still a very suspenseful movie with a great performance by Nicolas Cage as we see his demeanor and perspective change. A great action/suspense movie that is even more graphic than its predecessor, Se7en.
