"Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive." -William Shakespeare

Cruel Intentions, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Philippe, and Reese Witherspoon is a movie filled with plots, subplots and more as Annette (Witherspoon) unwittingly becomes a pawn in Sebastian (Philippe) and Kathryn's (Gellar) wager of sexual conquest when she writes an article in Seventeen Magazine about how she intends to save herself for marriage. A remake of Choderlos de Laclos' novel "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" for the teenage audience, this movie pushes the teenage envelope at times, with these high-schoolers using big words and discussing sexual themes quite openly. This movie, definately geared towards the teenage audience, despite it's R rating, is slow at times, but definitely presents a new twist at the theaters with a new outlook during these times of monotonously slow and boring teenager movies. With all of the tangled webs in this movie and the deception from Sebastian and Kathryn, this movie had it's times. Trying to throw in a love-story when Sebastian actually falls for Annette during his "conquest," the movie loses steam and becomes a bit slow. Despite the slowness of this film, at times it was bearable, but overall, this movie just can't stack up. I guess I have to rent Dangerous Liasons starring John Malkovich, Michelle Pfieffer, and Glenn Close so that I can compare the two, but I have a feeling this movie can't even get close to the afore mentioned. I'm sure this movie will be a hit with the teenagers (especially the young men and all of those Buffy fans), but for the more mature audience, this is definately a movie to be missed. I'd recommend seeing Analyze This, the hilarious comedy with Robert DeNiro and Billy Crystal, and pass on this one until it's free to watch on HBO or something.
