An Ideal Husband A review by: Blake Kunisch Directed by: Oliver Parker & Oliver+Parker Released: June 18, 1999 - US Posted: 1999/06/26 | 9/10 starsAn Ideal Husband is an ideal movie. The movie portrays the scheming of various characters in 19th century England. This movie has one of the most witty and fun scripts I have seen. The movie is filled with great little one-liners and witticisms. The dialogue back and forth between the various feuding couples and adversaries is worthy of an Oscar. An Ideal Husband stars Rupert Everett, Cate Blanchette, Minnie Driver, Jeremy Northam, and Julianne Moore as characters whose lives intertwine and cross daily. Lord Arthur Goring (Everett) is a bachelor of 36 years and refuses to get married when Miss Laura Chevely (Moore) enters his and Sir Robert Chilton's (Northam) life with some disturbing news. It appears that she owns a note that blemishes the perfect career of Sir Robert Chilton. In order to get this note back, Chilton must flip-flop his stance on the Argentine canal and support it so that Miss Chevely can make a pretty penny from investments. This movie is a treat to watch as all of the subplots play themselves out to fruition in the end. This isn't another one of the costume dramas that we've been accustomed to, but rather a fun, clever, and intelligent adaptation of Oscar Wilde's play. I enjoyed watching this movie and it wasn't just for the one-liners that Rupert Everett uses throughout, but rather for the actual "intelligent" dialogue between characters. Each line had it's place and the movie shined as a result. Another spectacular film from Miramax and a downright treat for moviegoers.
