Run Lola Run A review by: Blake Kunisch Directed by: Tom Tykwer & Tom+Tykwer Released: June 18, 1999 - US Posted: 1999/07/27 | 9/10 starsRun Lola Run is 80 minutes of fast-paced action with superb acting, direction, and a great example of filmmaking. Exactly what the title implies, this film is about Lola Running (the original German title is Lola Rennt). The movie starts with Lola on the phone with her boyfriend Manni. Lola's moped was stolen and she was unable to pick Manni up after an unscrupulous business deal. Manni then had to take the subway and when he exited, he forgot his bag and is now 100,000 d-marks in the hole. How can Lola get the money in 20 minutes to save her boyfriend's life? Her dad - a prominent banker, but he's over 10 minutes away from where she lives. So, let's start the running. Combining a techno-pop score in the background with new filmmaking techniques and camera shots give this film a uniqueness not present in everyday films. Perhaps this uniqueness is what has won it international praise and countless awards. Perhaps it is the superb acting. A relative new-comer to the screen, Lola is played by Franka Potente. With her hair dyed bright red and a peculiar beauty about her, Franka is spectacular. This film is a true gem of filmmaking and I am certainly glad that I finally got around to seeing it. The rare combination of great filmmaking with spectacular actors is what makes this film shine. I would highly recommend this film and highly recommend the soundtrack (much of it composed by the Director/Writer Tom Tykwer).
