Bowfinger A review by: Blake Kunisch Directed by: Frank Oz & Frank+Oz Released: August 13, 1999 - US Posted: 1999/08/15 | 9/10 starsBowfinger stars Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy as a director and an actor in Hollywood on completely opposite ends of the spectrum. Bobby Bowfinger, president of Bowfinger International Pictures, has the script of a lifetime, Chubby Rain, where aliens come down to earth in the rain, thus making the rain chubby. What do you do with a great script? Look for backing. So he takes it to Jerry Renfro who says he has a 'gold picture.' Just one catch, Kit Ramsey (Eddie Murphy) needs to be in the film. Kit Ramsey, the biggest action star in Hollywood, seems to be having problems already with aliens and the Laker girls so he turns down the script. What is Bobby Bowfinger to do? He decides to shoot the picture anyway. And the fun begins. To add to his already meager cast, Bobby Bowfinger holds a talent search looking for the leading lady for the picture. Along comes Daisy (Heather Graham) - just off the bus from Oklahoma, looking to be a star, she'll do whatever is necessary to earn the admiration of her coworkers. Now Bobby needs a camera crew. Where to find cheap labor? The border - he picks up 4 Hispanics running from authorities crossing the border. This film plays on almost every stereotype that is known about Hollywood and the U.S. in general. Now that they have a cast, they just need to shoot the picture without Kit Ramsey knowing he's in it. Bowfinger combines one of the most original (and quite funny too) scripts in a long time with a superb cast. Eddie Murphy in yet another multi-role performance is spectacular in his best showing since The Nutty Professor. Steve Martin is perfect in this movie written by himself for himself. While the movie tried to be satiric, it just didn't seem to achieve all that it could be. It was a great comedy, but on the satire front, it could have been better. Because of it's satiric qualities, Bowfinger was quite stereotypical and had it's fair share of inappropriate laughs. Nonetheless, Bowfinger really delivers in the comedy department and and definitely worth seeing.
