Detroit Rock City A review by: Blake Kunisch Directed by: Adam Rifkin & Adam+Rifkin Released: August 13, 1999 - US Posted: 1999/08/18 | 8/10 starsDetroit Rock City, in one word is: fun. From start to finish, the movie keeps
your attention, delivers laughs, action, and beatings. Centered around 4 kids whose
sole objective in life has been to see a KISS concert in person, Detroit Rock City
chronicles their lives from extreme highs to the lowest of lows.
As Hawk (Edward Furlong), Lex (Giuseppe Andrews), Trip (James DeBello) and Jam (Sam
Huntington) practice in their band Mystery one night before seeing their idols KISS in
concert, it is apparent that they have lived their lives for what is going to happen the
next night. They have their tickets, their plans are all laid out, but into even the
most well planned trips, unforeseen mishaps occur. In the case of these four
unfortunate boys, it's Jam's mother, member of M.A.T.M.O.K. (Mothers Against The Music Of
Kiss) and a religious fanatic. She gets a hold of their tickets and sends Jam off to
a religious institution. The solution? Reunite the foursome, of course, and
scam your way into the KISS concert. On the way to Detroit and while in Detroit, the
movie really takes off (not to say that until that point it was boring, on the contrary,
it was quite enjoyable, but the rest of the movie is even more so). All four of
these teenagers have their own personality and each is well developed throughout the
movie. I couldn't help but notice how similar these four are to friends that I have.
The script is superbly written and it captures the seventies brilliantly (or so I'm
told - wasn't alive then for the most part).
This movie is a case where box office performance does not suggest quality of the
movie. Detroit Rock City failed to break the top 10 it's first week although this
was an extremely fun film. I think that most people would like this if they saw it,
but because it didn't get the coverage it deserved, most people don't think they would
like it. Everybody that I have talked to who has seen this movie loved it.
Although not a cinematic masterpiece, Detroit Rock City is just one of those movies
that you don't even realize you're watching until it's over because it keeps your
attention throughout and is very enjoyable. If you have a chance, go see this movie,
you'll be pleasantly surprised.
