Plunkett and MacLeane
A review by: Blake Kunisch
Directed by: Jake Scott & Jake+Scott
Released: October 1, 1999 - US

You know that when you're exiting the theater thinking, "That was only 93 minutes?" the movie couldn't have been that good.  Periodically, throughout Plunkett and MacLeane, I glanced down at my watch and thought to myself, how much longer?  The surprising thing is Plunkett and MacLeane wasn't that bad, it just did move fast enough and if it would have, it might have made a good movie.

Plunkett and MacLeane chronicles the adventures of, obviously, Plunkett and MacLeane.   These two self-proclaimed "gentleman highwaymen" rob the rich, but do so courteously, as to not injure their captives, unless in the utmost important situations.   These two robbers like to terrorize the English nobility and do so in a great way.   They not only humiliate them by stealing from them, but in eluding capture, they make everyone in senate upset and the feud continues.

Plunkett and MacLeane has it's share of fun and excitement, but it seems to be the same situation over and over with an ending tacked on to bring the film to a conclusion.   Throw in the obligatory love story with the beautiful Liv Tyler and the ever-present villain, played by Ken Stott, and that pretty much sums up the movie.   They rob, love, rob, fight, and the movie ends.  The conclusion, however is fun and unexpected and I actually was able to enjoy the end of the movie.  Another complaint I have with this film is that it is very dark.  Many scenes are barely visible and it is hard to see what is happening.  This was most likely done on purpose, but I found it unnecessary and pointless.

In conclusion, Plunkett and MacLeane definitely has its fun parts, but overall, there just isn't enough substance to sustain the movie for an hour and a half.  Fans of British films may like this just for the British film genre, but overall, Plunkett and MacLeane was a let-down.
