Toy Story 2 A review by: Blake Kunisch Directed by: John Lasseter & John+Lasseter Released: November 24, 1999 - US Posted: 1999/12/03 | 9/10 starsWhat is there really to say? Pixar Animation Studios has definitely outdone themselves with this fine piece of work. Toy Story 2 is both visually stunning (as expected) with a great storyline which carries the toys throughout the large city they live in on adventures in the toy store itself, the street, and the dreaded garage sales. Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Mr. Potatohead, and the rest of the toys are back in the much awaited and highly praised sequel. This time the toys are out to save Woody after he has been stolen by the evil Al (of Al's Toy Barn) to complete his "Woody's Roundup" collection - for sale to some toy museum in Japan. The movie is just completely stunning - we are once again returned to the world we know and love from the original, which was no small feat considering the advances in technology since then. The animators actually couldn't make the characters look real to the best of their ability or they would have looked too real and too different from the original.
Toy Story 2 is able to combine the action and adventure as the toys search for Woody with just a sheer brilliance of visual delights. The storyline is both thought-provoking and extremely funny. With parodies of many mainstream movies (think Jurassic Park, Star Wars, etc.) along with parodies of other toys (think Barbie, Mr. Potatohead and the rest), Toy Story 2 is just fun to watch from start to finish. Throw in a very beautiful preview for "Dinosaur" and a short animation explaining why Pixar's logo has a jumping light in it and you're set. You'll not only recognize the cast from the original, but you just might recognize Geri (Geri's Game) as the elderly toy cleaner come to fix up Woody (a pleasant surprise). From the young ones to the adults, Toy Story 2 provides a great time at the theater with laughs and action throughout. A must see this holiday season.
