End of Days
A review by: Blake Kunisch
Directed by: Peter Hyams & Peter+Hyams

Arnold vs. the Devil - who's going to win? Well according to End of Days, the almost laughingly stupid movie from director Peter Hyams, life will go on after the millenium. The basic premise is stupid enough, yet someone decided this movie had to be made. It seems that according to the Catholic scriptures, after 1,000 years, the Devil will return to earth to impregnate a pre-determined person during the last hour of the millenium. In steps Arnold - working for a high-priced security firm, Arnold decides that he is going to be the protector of this girl and save her from all that is evil.

There's just so many things wrong with this movie I don't know where to begin. The plot is full of gaping holes and the dialogue is just plain stupid. They tried to insert some one-liners, but most of the time the audience just sat there dumbfounded. The whole premise, unbelievable as expected, was just so absurd, it's not even funny. You'd think the writers and director would have done some investigation into the whole idea of the millenium, the Gregorian calendar, the interpretation of the scriptures, etc.

End of Days is being billed as the "return of Arnold," and quite simply, Arnold should have known better than to take this one. I have quite a lot of respect for Arnold - he's been in many good action movies and usually picks his roles well, but he really should have passed this one by. There was too much acting for Arnold to do - he can do action, but he's just not that good at crying, or being sincere for that case. I just wish he would have held off on this movie and left it for a mediocre Jean-Claude or someone similar.

All in all, End of Days tries to accomplish so many things, but just fails miserably in all attempts. I was hoping for more despite all the dismal reviews, but alas, trying to resist the sheer and utter stupidity of this movie is hopeless. Maybe next time Arnold will have the smarts to do a good film and maybe next time director Peter Hyams will have the foresight to know that his films usually don't amount to much and take some time off.
