Galaxy Quest A review by: Blake Kunisch Directed by: Dean Parisot & Dean+Parisot Released: December 25, 1999 - US Posted: 1999/12/27 | 7/10 starsTrekkies are everywhere, you may not know it, but they exist in everyone's lives.
One of my best friends' dad is a semi-trekkie, and maybe you don't know it, but
your best friend may be a Trekkie too. Galaxy Quest plays on the idea of Trekkies
and does so perfectly. Questerians as they are called know every episode and worship
the ground the crew of Galaxy Quest walk upon. Questerians dress like their favorite
character and they ask questions about details that the writers overlooked in one episode.
They gather in mass numbers for the Galaxy Quest Convention and they know the
insides of the Galaxy Quest ship down to every nook and cranny. Questerians are an
interesting bunch, but not even close to as interesting as the actual characters/crew of
the Galaxy Quest TV show.
Commander Peter Quincy Taggart (Tim Allen), Lt. Tawny Madison (Sigourney Weaver), Tech
Sergeant Chen (Tony Shalhoub), and Lt. Laredo (Daryl Mitchell) are the fearless crew of
the NSEA Protector. For years they have battled space aliens and protected
the galaxy from evil. Unbeknownced to them, the TV signals intended for people on
earth also reached to the farthest galaxy. Twenty years later, still playing off the
popularity of the TV show, the cast is touring promoting different stores, and as usual,
showing up at Galaxy Con. There they encounter four mysterious people, pretending to
be aliens. Because of the eccentric fans surrounding them, the cast passes them off
as fans as well, only when teleported to their ship does Commander Taggart actually
realize these aliens are the real thing. He then persuades the rest of his crew to
go back with him - what else have they got to do but attend openings for hardware and
garden shops? And the fun begins.
Surprisingly, Galaxy Quest is a funny and witty comedy which doesn't need to rely on
blood and guts or foul language to entertain. It's been a long time since I've seen
a PG movie I've enjoyed and I'm glad I ventured out to see Galaxy Quest. The
characters were all well developed with their own unique traits and mannerisms and the
aliens were especially funny. I enjoyed watching the way the walked, talked,
clapped, and just about anything they did. Tim Allen was actually bearable for the
first time since he was the Tool Man. Sigourney Weaver looks the best I've ever seen
her and at 50, that's a great accomplishment. She also played the part of the sexy
lieutenant all of the fans lusted over very well. The leader of the aliens, Mathesar
(Enrico Colantoni - best known as Elliot on NBC's Just Shoot Me), was probably
the highlight of the film. He got the most laughs out of the crowd and played his
character perfectly. He did such a great job it took me a while just to figure out
who he was and what I knew him from.
Galaxy Quest is a great take on the "what-if" storyline and I enjoyed it
immensely. Some parts were overly clichéd, but that's to be expected from a film of
this type. The acting was superb and the Questerians were especially funny.
Galaxy Quest took a great script and made it into a witty and hilarious movie
appropriate for all ages. A must see this holiday season. "Never give up, never surrender!"
