The Hurricane A review by: Blake Kunisch Directed by: Norman Jewison & Norman+Jewison Released: January 14th, 2000 - US Posted: 2000/01/04 | 8/10 starsThe Hurricane is a powerful story of one man's injustice and the fight to see him
freed. Telling the true story of Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, The Hurricane stars
Denzel Washington as the once great boxer unjustly accused of a crime he didn't commit and
subsequently sentenced to 3 consecutive life terms in jail. This movie is about a few
things actually - it's not only about Mr. Carter's unjust imprisonment, but also, a young
man's ambitions being fulfilled and the generosity of 3 Canadians. It was great how
director Norman Jewison was able to interweave these plotlines with flashbacks and court
cases. The editing was superb and the acting top-notch.
The Hurricane isn't just the story of an unjustly accused man, but rather how we can
overcome adversity and hatred. How we can actually make a difference in the world and how
one man's struggle can affect so many. The Hurricane is a brilliant story and even Rubin
Carter was amazed at Denzel's performance, "Until I saw Denzel Washington portraying
me, I didn't know how good I am." Denzel is essentially the cornerstone of this
movie. At times the movie moves a little to slowly, but whenever Denzel is on the screen,
he is absolutely captivating. Expect an Oscar nod for Denzel and a great movie at the
theater.
