Keeping the Faith
A review by: Blake Kunisch
Directed by: Edward Norton & Edward+Norton
Released: April 7, 2000 - US
Posted: 2000/04/01 | 9/10 stars

Keeping the Faith is quite possibly the longest rabbi and priest joke you'll ever hear, but it is able to keep your attention throughout and have you begging for more when it's over.

Starring Edward Norton as Father Brian Finn, Ben Stiller as Rabbi Jacob Schram and Jenna Elfman as their long-time friend, Anna Reilly. The three were best friends growing up and knew everything about each other. Then when Anna had to pick up and move with her father to California, they no longer kept in touch, but remembered each other. Out of the blue, Anna calls up Brian telling him that she's coming to visit and she wants to get together with him and Jacob. Hence starts the fun.

It's been quite a while since I sat in a movie theater and was sincerely disappointed when the film was over. Usually I'm just able to look back and assess the movie - did I like it, or didn't I? Keeping the Faith was easy to assess - I loved it. When I noticed the film was nearing the end, I asked to myself, 'already?' Hilarious throughout with witty one-liners and clever situations, Keeping the Faith mixes it up in relation to both religion and relationships.

The main reason this movie goes together so well is the cast. Norton and Stiller are both hilarious in their roles as the leaders of their respective congregations. Also, the casting of Elfman is first-rate - she seems to tower over both the men and is perfect as the on-the-go businesswoman. Because of her height, she exudes confidence, but also exhibits her weaknesses in both business and relationships. The three meld together into a superb comedic team.

Definitely not a movie to pass up in the coming weeks, make sure Keeping the Faith tops your list. It's comic genius and hilarious situations will keep you entertained throughout. While deeply religious people may be offended at times, none of the actions are blatently sacrilegious - just go for a good time - not to nit-pick and criticize.
