The Perfect Storm A review by: Blake Kunisch Directed by: Wolfgang Petersen & Wolfgang+Petersen Released: June 30, 2000 - US Posted: 2000/06/30 | 7/10 starsSpecial effects at their best. Almost no plot. George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg as fishermen. Big storm. That's about it. There's really not much more to The Perfect Storm than the above few fragments. Everyone's been talking about the special effects, and yes, they are simply amazing throughout the film, but the problem is, that's the whole film almost. Showing off the special effects that the folks at ILM were able to come up with. Not to take away from the six fisherman who lost their lives in the perfect storm, it's just that this film really doesn't do much but show what might have happened in the last few moments and what might have occured aboard the Andrea Gail. Halfway through the movie, I was left wondering where exactly they could go with the meager plot, and the end result was that they split off into other little stories - a mayday at sea of a sailboat and the chaos aboard a Coast Guard copter. All of these happenings were interspersed with the real story aboard the Andrea Gail, and nothing really seemed to come together. If you're looking for a popcorn flick that involves some nail-biting suspense and some great special effects, The Perfect Storm is the movie for you, but if you're looking for a genuinely good movie, try something else - The Patriot or Chicken Run - for example.
