X-Men
A review by: Blake Kunisch
Directed by: Bryan Singer & Bryan+Singer

If you're x-pecting a review packed with words such as x-ceptional, x-citing, and x-tremely good, well, I'm done. First off, I need to say that I've only read a couple X-Men comics and I've never seen the TV show - so, going into the movie I didn't know too much about the X-Men. Sure, I'd heard of Wolverine, Rogue, and Storm, but beyond that, I'm new to the X-Men. And because of that, I think that I was able to enjoy X-Men more than most reviewers.

Because this movie was more of a set-up for the sequels (yes, sequels - the major players have already signed on for at least 2 more X-Men movies - and I can't wait), the movie took a while to get going. The end result was a storyline that needed to be compressed into less than a movie while the rest of the movie was devoted to introducing the major characters and setting up what the X-Men were all about. Nonetheless, the movie overall was both entertaining and a great set-up for whatever comes next.

Set in the "not so distant future," X-Men revolves around a group of people with certain mutations which give them the power to perform certain super-human actions (manipulate metal, control weather, etc.). Now the battle has begun between those who believe the powers should be used for good, and those who believe they should use the powers to create a world where mutants alone are the superior force. Hence the mutants fight amongst themselves along with their own war against the humans who want to keep them down. Combined with some great special effects, fight scenes, and costumes, X-Men delivers the goods and it quite possibly, the biggest surprise of the Summer for me.
