Coyote Ugly A review by: Blake Kunisch Directed by: David McNally & David+McNally Released: August 4, 2000 - US Posted: 2000/08/04 | 5/10 starsCoyote Ugly (ki-o'te ug'le): 1. When you wake up after getting plastered the night before with someone on your so ugly that you'd rather gnaw your arm off than risk waking them up. 2. A movie with nothing new to the genre, mysteriously produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, starring 5 bimbos dancing on a bar. Coyote Ugly is the typical movie with a plot it seems that we've seen a million times - Violet, an aspiring song-writer moves to New York, but realizes that life isn't that easy and ends up facing reality. Her naïveté plays well in this movie as she doesn't expect all the cliched happenings that go hand in hand with New York. From her apartment being broken into, to the misleading men, and last, but not least, the scantily-clad bar-wenches at the bar - Coyote Ugly, she doesn't expect a thing. Walking down an alley counting your tips in New York is probably not the brightest thing, nor would be counting hundreds of dollars in a small cafe at 4 in the morning. But who cares? Who really needs to know that the plot is full of all the cliches inherent in this genre? Maybe some people do, but what most people go to the movis for is to have fun - and most will like this movie. The exit polls were great for this movie - rating A's for women of all ages - and despite the testosterone charged trailer, it mainly is a flick for the women. Sure, you'll see 4 women participating in a sort of dance contest on the top of the bar, pouring water all over themselves (of course Violet's dad happens to walk in and misunderstands the situation), but the majority of the audience seemed to enjoy it and even though it is full of flaws and you can see the ending a mile away, you'll most likely enjoy it also. It has it's problems, but Bruckheimer knows what the audience likes and delivers. Coyote Ugly is a bad movie - not bad enough that you'll laugh at it - but still, it's a bad movie that entertains. One of my favorite reviewers summed it up perfectly: "What the big studios need to do is get their heads out of their a**es and make more movies like this. They don't have to be smart. They don't need to make me think. They just need to entertain me and make me tingle in all the right places. Is that so much to ask?" -B. Fatt (link contains objectionable material)
