Bedazzled A review by: Blake Kunisch Directed by: Harold Ramis & Harold+Ramis Released: October 20, 2000 - US Posted: 2000/10/20 | 4/10 starsThe problem with seeing two movies in one day - back to back nonetheless - is that one is always going to overshadow the other. Today, while trying to sit through Bedazzled, I hoped that the next movie, Best In Show would be better. While sitting though Best In Show, I forgot about Bedazzled altogether. Can you forget a good movie in less than two hours? No. Can you forget a horrible movie in less than two hours? Yes - and I forgot about Bedazzled in much less than two hours. Bedazzled, based on the 1967 original starring Dudley Moore goes nowhere fast. This re-make, directed by Harold Ramis (Analyze This, Groundhog Day), lacks all the comedy inherent in his previous movies. Starring Brendan Fraser (not one of my favorite actors) as a loser (what a stretch) who isn't a hit with the girls in San Francisco and Elizabeth Hurley as the devil, out to offer him 7 wishes for his soul, Bedazzled takes jokes that could have been funny and stretches them out into 10 minute sequences that are quite the opposite of humorous. Obviously, we're going to see Eliot (Fraser) make his seven wishes and we're going to watch him fail miserably as he doesn't specify exactly what he wants, leaving the devil to do as she pleases. You'd think he'd cover all his bases after maybe the first 2, but he never really gets it right and if you've seen it once, you've seen it enough. Bedazzled is quite unfunny with only a couple of actual lines that are comedic. I tried to enjoy this movie and as good as Elizabeth Hurley looks, she can't do anything to save this movie. The film does really nothing to keep the viewer interested as it just hops from one wish to another and finally ends up with a quite corny ending that really doesn't work well with the movie. I had been looking forward to Bedazzled for a while as it starred Hurley and was directed by Ramis, but much to my chagrin, the end result of this movie, is positively disappointing. I had hoped for a funny, memorable experience, but what I was left with was an unfunny movie that has only a couple good one-liners that vanished from my memory upon exiting the theater. It's a miracle I remember enough about this movie to still be able to write this review.
