Little Nicky A review by: Blake Kunisch Directed by: Steven Brill & Steven+Brill Released: November 10, 2000 - US Posted: 2000/11/16 | 2/10 starsDon't ask me why I saw this movie - I really don't know. It may be because I liked most previous Adam Sandler movies, it may be because I was extremely bored that day, whatever the reason, I will always regret it. Talking to a friend about Adam Sandler movies, I think he hit it right on the head. Movies where Adam plays a real person - Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison, Big Daddy - are actually good because he's able to use comedy to further the plot, whereas movies where he's challenged in some way - The Water Boy and Little Nicky - are downright horrible because he doesn't use comedy to further the movie, but relies solely on his deficiency for laughs. `Here, Sandler plays the spawn of an Angel (Reese Witherspoon - how'd she get dragged into this one) and the Devil. Hit at a young age with a shovel in the face by one of his evil brothers, who now have returned to earth to turn it into a hell of their own, Little Nicky is the last person his father can turn to to save the world. Apparently, when his brothers went up to the world, they froze the gates of hell, preventing any souls who die from entering hell, which then causes the Devil to disintegrate. Little Nicky has to go up to the real world and find his brothers and bring them back to hell so that the gates can re-open. Problem is Nicky's never been top-side and this is where the writers hope to throw in all of the comedy. Unfortunately, nothing works - this movie is as stale as 2-year-old crackers and offers absolutely no entertainment value. Little Nicky tries to be a typical Adam Sandler movie, but fails miserably. The jokes fall flat on their face, and the movie as a whole presents maybe 1 or 2 laughs throughout. The acting is extremely sub-par - and while mindless movies do have their place in theaters today (e.g. Road Trip) Little Nicky is the bottom of the barrel. While I didn't have high hopes going in, I really didn't expect it to be this bad. It's just horrible, and I really don't know any other way to put it. Sandler isn't funny, the plot is stupid, and the acting sucks. Stay away, stay far, far away.
