Double Take A review by: Blake Kunisch Directed by: George Gallo & George+Gallo Released: January 12, 2001 - US Posted: 2001/01/13 | 4/10 starsDouble Take tries to create a comedic masterpiece off of strong performances of its stars, Eddie Griffin (of UPN's now-defunct Malcom and Eddie) and Orlando Jones (the 7-up guy). But what Double Take ends up doing is creating a jumble of storylines with absurd twists, unlaughable jokes, annoying characters, and absolutely no continuity throughout. At the heart of the story is Daryl Chase (Jones), a high powered Wall St. executive who is mistakingly identified as the killer of two NYPD officers. Freddy Tiffany (Griffin) is an obnoxious street hustler who is a thorn in Daryl's shoe as he hustles him for $100, interrupts him at a party, and is just annoying for the most part of the film. They eventually team up to combine Daryl's book smarts with Freddy's street smarts to get Daryl to Mexico so that Daryl can evade the thugs who are out to get him in some sort of drug-trafficking scheme and escape to the safety of the CIA (because they are only in Mexico...). The problem with this movie is not it's stars, although Freddie Griffin does become quite annoying after about 10 minutes, but in its script. The script contains elements of the FBI, CIA, NYPD, and other agencies hot on the tale of Mr. Chase for some odd reason. The thing is, throughout the whole movie (excepting the last 5 minutes), you don't know who belongs to which organization, who is lying, and who is telling the truth. The whole movie becomes one big jumbled mess as you try and sort out who is who, and who is telling the truth. It makes absolutely no sense and only in the last 5 minutes do you actually get told the truth (which itself makes very little sense). Had it not been for the horrible script, Double Take might have had a chance at being a decent film - the comedy isn't top-notch, but you do laugh a couple times. Double Take will no doubt falter at the box office following bad word-of-mouth, horrible reviews, and very poor advertising. I was actually looking forward to this movie going into it - I thought it might actually be a good comedy, but it just ended up being another sub-par January movie. Hopefully this doesn't hurt Orlando Jones' career too much - he has promise, and he did a good job. If you can stand a plot that makes no sense, a character that grates on the nerves, and an ending that is utterly stupid, you might enjoy this film - if not, stay away, very, very far away.
